Why the pickup is at 4am

Balloon flights over Dubai launch at first light, and only at first light. Desert air is stable in a narrow window either side of sunrise; once the sand starts absorbing heat, thermals build and ballooning stops being either safe or comfortable. That means a hotel pickup somewhere between 4am and 5am depending on where you are staying and the time of year.

It is an unreasonable hour and it is not negotiable. It is also why the flight is worth doing — you are in the air for the one hour of the day when the desert is cool, still and completely silent.

How the morning runs

A vehicle collects you and drives roughly an hour into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, a protected area covering about five percent of the emirate. You arrive while the ground crew is still inflating the envelope, which is worth watching: a balloon going from flat fabric to fully upright takes around twenty minutes and is loud, hot and genuinely dramatic.

After a safety briefing you climb in and lift off as the sun clears the horizon.

In the air

Flights run around 60 minutes at altitudes up to roughly 1,200 metres. Because the reserve is protected land, wildlife is common from the basket — Arabian oryx, sand gazelle and free-roaming camel herds. Balloons drift with the wind rather than steering, so no two flights follow the same track and the pilot controls only altitude.

After landing

The ground crew meets the balloon wherever it sets down and packs it away while breakfast is served in the desert. You are presented with a signed flight certificate and driven back to your hotel. Door to door the morning runs four to five hours, so you are usually back before mid-morning with the rest of the day intact.

What to wear and bring

• Closed-toe shoes — landing sites are sand and scrub, not tarmac
• Layers. Pre-dawn desert is genuinely cold in winter and warms very fast after sunrise
• A camera with a wrist or neck strap. Nothing dropped from a basket comes back
• Skip the hat at altitude; there is little sun at that hour and it will blow off

Restrictions

• Minimum age is typically 5, and children must be able to stand unaided in the basket
• Not suitable during pregnancy
• Passengers with recent surgery, or back or heart conditions, should check with us first
• Landing involves a braced standing position and can be bumpy
• Maximum weight limits apply and are confirmed at booking
