The one Dubai garden that works in summer

Dubai Butterfly Garden is an indoor attraction in Dubailand made of nine domes, each held at the temperature and humidity tropical butterflies need. It opened in 2015 and is billed as the largest covered butterfly garden in the world. The climate control is the point: while the Miracle Garden next door shuts from May to October, this stays open all twelve months.

What is inside the domes

Roughly 15,000 butterflies across about 50 species, flying free rather than behind glass. The domes are planted with nectar sources and feeding stations are set at eye level, which is where most people get their photographs — stand still for a minute in bright clothing and butterflies will land on you. Species rotate, but expect large swallowtails, blue morphos, monarchs and owl butterflies among them.

The Butterfly Museum

A separate indoor section covering the life cycle from egg through caterpillar and chrysalis to adult, usually including a display case of pupae close to emergence. It is short, well captioned and the part that holds older children.

Photography

• Wear bright colours. Butterflies are drawn to them and will land on you far more often
• Skip perfume and aftershave, which repels them
• Bring a lens that focuses close; a phone works but a macro is better
• Lenses fog on entry because of the humidity — allow a couple of minutes
• Never handle the butterflies; wing scales damage on contact

Timing your visit

• Mornings are quieter and the butterflies are most active in warmer light
• Weekends and school holidays are busiest in the late afternoon
• Allow 60 to 90 minutes for all nine domes and the museum
• Entry is not timed, so you can move at your own pace once inside

What it costs and who it suits

Entry is inexpensive by Dubai attraction standards, which matters because the visit is short — this is an hour-and-a-half attraction, not a half day, and pricing it against a theme park is the wrong comparison. It suits families with young children, photographers, and anyone looking for something outdoors-feeling in the months when outdoors is not an option. Visitors expecting a large zoo or a botanical collection will find it smaller than imagined; visitors expecting nine well-planted domes full of free-flying butterflies will get exactly that.

Getting there

The garden is on Al Barsha South in Dubailand, directly beside Dubai Miracle Garden. There is no metro station within walking distance — the nearest is Mall of the Emirates, still a 15 to 20 minute drive. Parking on site is free. Allow roughly 25 minutes from Downtown and 20 from Dubai Marina outside peak hours.

Doing both gardens in one trip

The two gardens share a car park and are a few minutes' walk apart, which makes them the obvious pairing between October and May. The practical order is Miracle Garden first thing while it is cool, then the Butterfly Garden's air conditioning afterwards.
