Dubai Butterfly Garden Tickets: Nine Domes, Open All Year

Dubai Butterfly Garden tickets from AED 55, for nine air-conditioned domes in Al Barsha South where thousands of butterflies fly loose around the walkways. The useful thing about it, and the reason it earns a place in a summer itinerary, is that it stays open all year while the Miracle Garden next door shuts down completely from June.

It does not include transport, food and drink, anything from the gift shop, or entry to Dubai Miracle Garden, which shares the site but sells its own separate ticket.

What the visit is like

Each dome is kept at the temperature and humidity butterflies need, which means roughly 25 degrees and noticeably damp air. You walk through on paved paths with the butterflies loose around you — landing on shoulders, bags and occasionally hair. They are drawn to bright colours, so anyone wearing red, orange or yellow will attract considerably more attention than someone in black.

The museum section explains the life cycle, and the pupae case is the part most children stay longest at: rows of chrysalises with new butterflies working their way out, which happens often enough that you usually see at least one.

Allow about an hour. It is small, and the pleasure is in walking it slowly rather than covering ground.

What lives in the domes

The species rotate, but you will usually find the large showy ones that make the photographs: blue morphos, which look black until they open and catch the light, owl butterflies with the eye markings on the underwing, and the big swallowtails. Feeding stations with sliced fruit are where most of them gather, so if a dome looks empty, find the fruit.

There are also koi ponds, a small aviary section and seating in most domes, which matters more than it sounds when you are walking a hot site with children.

Best time to go

Morning, for two reasons. Butterflies are more active in the first part of the day, so you see more flying rather than resting, and the domes are quieter before the afternoon crowd arrives from the Miracle Garden next door.

Unlike almost everything else outdoors in Dubai, the season does not matter. The domes hold their own climate, so a July visit looks the same as a January one. That makes it one of the few genuinely reliable options in the middle of summer.

Getting there and parking

The garden is in Al Barsha South 3, on the same site as Dubai Miracle Garden and past Dubai Autodrome. There is no metro station nearby. Parking is free and on site.

Taxis reach it easily. If you are visiting between October and May, most people combine it with the Miracle Garden and park once for both.

Good to know

• Bright clothing attracts more butterflies, which is worth knowing if you want photographs — or want to avoid them.
• Do not touch or pick up butterflies; staff will ask you to stop. They land of their own accord often enough.
• Check shoulders and bags before leaving each dome, as butterflies sometimes travel with you.
• The humidity fogs camera lenses for the first minute or two after you walk in.
• Paths are flat and indoor throughout, which suits pushchairs, wheelchairs and small children.
• Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your visit.

Is it worth it?

At AED 55 for an hour, yes — particularly with children, and particularly in summer when the list of comfortable options is short. Having butterflies land on you is a genuinely different experience from looking at them in a case.

Adults travelling without children may find an hour generous. If you are choosing between this and the Miracle Garden on a winter afternoon, the Miracle Garden is the bigger spectacle; the Butterfly Garden is the better one when it is 45 degrees outside.
