Dubai Travel Guide

The Dubai Fountain is the one show in Dubai that costs nothing to watch. Every evening, the water on Burj Lake rises and sways to music in front of the Burj Khalifa, and thousands of people stop to watch. Where you stand makes a big difference, though. From the right spot it feels like the water is dancing just for you; from the wrong one you're watching through a wall of phones. This guide covers the current show times and every viewing spot worth knowing, both free and paid, so you can choose the right one for your evening.

Quick answer: Evening shows run every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm, every day. There are also two afternoon shows: 1pm and 1:30pm Saturday to Thursday, and 2pm and 2:30pm on Fridays. Each show lasts about 5 minutes and is free to watch from the promenade outside Dubai Mall or the bridge to Souk Al Bahar. For a closer view, take a lake ride on a traditional abra or buy a Boardwalk ticket.

Last updated: 10 October 2026. Show times are set by Emaar and can change for Ramadan, public holidays, official occasions, maintenance or bad weather. Check on the day if your plans depend on one particular show.

Dubai Fountain show timings

The fountain runs on a simple schedule, which hasn't changed since the show reopened after its 2025 renovation. In the evening there's a show on the hour and the half hour, and in the afternoon there are just two shows.

DayAfternoon showsEvening shows
Saturday to Thursday1:00pm and 1:30pmEvery 30 minutes, 6:00pm to 11:00pm
Friday2:00pm and 2:30pmEvery 30 minutes, 6:00pm to 11:00pm

That's 11 evening shows a night, starting at 6pm and finishing with the 11pm show. Each one is set to a different piece of music, from Arabic classics to international hits, so if you stay for two or three shows you won't see the same routine twice. Each performance lasts about five minutes.

When the timings change

The fountain doesn't always follow the normal schedule. During Ramadan the timings usually shift, with the evening shows starting later to fit around iftar. On big occasions such as New Year's Eve and public holidays, the schedule can be extended or replaced by special performances. The show can also pause at short notice for official occasions, maintenance or strong wind. If you're travelling at one of these times, check the schedule on the day before you set off.

Which show should you watch?

All the evening shows are free and they all look good, but some are noticeably better than others.

  • Winter, 6pm or 6:30pm. From November to February, the sun sets around 5:30pm, so the first shows happen in the blue light just after sunset, with the Burj Khalifa lighting up behind the water. This is the most beautiful time of day to watch, and the reason the early shows are the busiest.
  • Summer, after 7:30pm. From May to August the sun sets after 7pm, so the 6pm show happens in full daylight and heat. Wait until it's dark: the lights make the show.
  • Late evening, 9:30pm to 11pm. The crowds thin out noticeably after 9pm, especially on weekdays. If you want a front-row spot on the promenade without fighting for it, come late.
  • Afternoon shows. Good if you're already in Dubai Mall at lunchtime, but they don't compare to the evening shows. Don't plan a trip around them.

Weekends (Friday evening to Sunday) and public holidays are the busiest times. If you can, watch on a weekday evening.

Best free viewing spots

Dubai Fountain jets lit up on Burj Lake in Downtown Dubai
The fountain spans around 275 metres of Burj Lake, so you'll get a good view from almost anywhere around the water.

1. Dubai Mall Waterfront Promenade

This is where most people watch, and for good reason. Walk out of the waterfront exit of Dubai Mall and you're facing the lake, with the Burj Khalifa on your right. You get a wide, head-on view, and you can hear the music well. The downside is the crowd: for the early evening shows, the rail fills up 10 to 15 minutes before the show starts. There's no seating, so plan to stand.

2. Souk Al Bahar bridge and walkway

The footbridge between Dubai Mall and Souk Al Bahar crosses the lake, putting you right between the fountain and the Burj Khalifa. It's one of the best free photo spots in Dubai, and it's busy for the same reason. If the bridge is packed, keep walking along the Souk Al Bahar side of the lake, which is often quieter than the mall side and still has a clear view.

3. The lakefront towards Dubai Opera

Further around the lake, the walkway towards Dubai Opera gives you the fountain with the Burj Khalifa behind it, and noticeably more space. It's a good choice with children or a pushchair, when standing in a dense crowd isn't fun.

4. Burj Park

Past the Burj Khalifa from the promenade, Burj Park is a green open space by the lake. You see the fountain from the side rather than straight on, but it's much calmer, and you can sit on the grass instead of standing at the rail.

5. Inside Dubai Mall, from the upper levels

Several upper-level spots in Dubai Mall look out over the lake, including the terrace outside the Apple store. You get the show from above, which shows off the patterns in the water. You'll hear less of the music, but it's a handy option when it's hot or crowded outside.

Local tip

Stay for two shows. Watch the first one from wherever you can find a space, and when the crowd moves on afterwards, step up to the front for the next one, 30 minutes later.

Best paid viewing spots

The free spots are excellent, so paying is about getting closer, getting a seat or seeing the show from a different angle. These are the options worth your money.

1. Dubai Fountain Lake Ride (traditional abra)

This is the closest you can get to the fountain. You board a traditional wooden abra at a jetty on the Dubai Mall side of the lake, and the boat takes you out onto the water for about 30 minutes, timed so that you see at least one full show from the lake. The jets rise right next to the boat, the music surrounds you, and the Burj Khalifa towers overhead. It's the best experience of the fountain in Dubai, and there's live commentary along the way.

Expect some spray, especially in the front rows, and bring a light layer in winter. Arrive 15 minutes before your departure, because boats leave on time, and book sunset slots early, as they sell out first, especially from Thursday to Saturday.

2. The Dubai Fountain Boardwalk

The Boardwalk is a floating walkway on Burj Lake, about 9 metres from the fountain. You're closer than on the promenade, with fewer people around you and a clear view of the show. Tickets cost around AED 25 per person; you collect them at the At the Top counter on the lower ground level of Dubai Mall, and arriving 30 minutes before your slot is recommended. Children aged 11 and under need to be with an adult.

The lake ride and the Boardwalk cost about the same, so which one is right for you? The abra puts you on the water and gives you a 30-minute experience, while the Boardwalk is a shorter visit on foot. If you only do one, we'd choose the lake ride.

3. The Burj Khalifa observation deck

From 452 metres up, the fountain is small, but you see the whole pattern at once, which you can't from the ground. The sunset slot is the one to book, and you can watch the fountain from the deck as the city lights come on. Don't book the Burj Khalifa just for the fountain, though: it's a bonus on top of the view. Burj Khalifa At the Top tickets start from AED 175. If you're not sure which level to choose, read our At the Top vs SKY comparison.

From the Burj Khalifa you see Burj Lake from above, where the fountain's patterns make more sense.

4. Restaurant terraces

For a seat with a view and dinner with the show, book an outdoor table at one of the restaurants around the lake. A table lets you watch several shows in comfort, which is the big advantage over standing at the rail. Popular choices include Time Out Market Dubai and Karma Kafé in Souk Al Bahar, Thiptara and Ewaan at Palace Downtown, and Joe's Café on the upper level of Dubai Mall. For a view from high above, At.mosphere is on level 122 of the Burj Khalifa. Ask for an outdoor table that faces the fountain when you book, because not every table has a view, and some terraces don't take reservations.

5. A hotel room with a fountain view

Palace Downtown sits right on the lake, and several other hotels around Burj Lake, including Address Downtown and Address Dubai Mall, have rooms facing the fountain. It's the most expensive option, but on a special trip, watching the show from your balcony is hard to beat. Make sure you book a room category that actually faces the fountain.

Our honest verdict

Watch your first show free from the promenade or the Souk Al Bahar bridge. Then, if you have one evening to do it properly, take the lake ride. It's one of the cheapest paid experiences in Downtown, and seeing the show from the water is what people remember.

A perfect Downtown evening

The fountain, the Burj Khalifa and dinner are all within a few minutes' walk of each other, so it's easy to combine them in one evening:

  1. Burj Khalifa at sunset. Book a slot 30 to 45 minutes before sunset, and you'll see the city in daylight and lit up.
  2. A fountain show from the promenade. Come down and walk out to the lake for one of the early evening shows.
  3. A lake ride. Board an abra for a later show, when it's fully dark.
  4. Dinner by the lake. End at a terrace in Souk Al Bahar or Dubai Mall and catch the last shows with your meal.

How to get there

  • By metro: take the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, then follow the covered walkway into the mall. Allow 15 to 20 minutes from the station to the lake, because it's a long walk through the mall.
  • By taxi: ask for Dubai Mall or Souk Al Bahar. Souk Al Bahar drops you closer to the lake, with a shorter walk. Traffic around Downtown gets heavy on weekend evenings, so leave extra time.
  • By car: Dubai Mall has huge car parks, but they fill quickly on weekend evenings. Note which car park and level you parked on, as finding your car after the show is a common problem.

Tips for a better show

  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early if you want a spot at the rail for the early evening shows.
  • Film in landscape. The fountain is wide, and a vertical video cuts off most of the show. If you want photos, use burst mode at the high points of the music.
  • Watch one show without your phone. The music and the sound of the water are half the experience.
  • Keep children close. The promenade gets very crowded, so agree on a meeting point before the show.
  • Expect a wet lens on the lake ride and the Boardwalk, and bring a cloth.
  • In summer, stay inside the mall until a few minutes before the show starts, then walk out.
