Dubai rewards a plan. The city is spread along roughly 35 kilometres of coastline, the big attractions run on timed entry, and the difference between a good day and a wasted one is usually the order you do things in. This is the list we'd give a friend arriving for the first time: ten things genuinely worth your time, with the practical details that decide whether each one is a highlight or a let-down.
Quick answer: The top things to do in Dubai are the Burj Khalifa at sunset, a desert safari, the Dubai Fountain, a sunrise hot air balloon flight, Old Dubai and the Creek, the Dubai Frame, Dubai Marina from the water, Dubai Miracle Garden (October to May), a day trip to Abu Dhabi, and one great indoor attraction chosen for the season. Book anything with a timed slot before you fly. Our Dubai to Abu Dhabi day trip guide and Louvre Abu Dhabi guide cover the capital in a day.

1Burj Khalifa
The tallest building in the world, and the one thing nobody regrets doing. The standard ticket, At The Top, takes you to levels 124 and 125 at 452 metres, including the only outdoor terrace open to general visitors. Level 148 costs more and adds a separate, much quieter deck with a lounge.
The time slot matters more than the level. Book for roughly 30 to 45 minutes before sunset and you'll see the city in daylight, at golden hour and lit up after dark, all on one ticket. Not sure which level to pick? Read our At the Top vs SKY comparison. In winter, sunset slots sell out days in advance.

Dune driving, camels, a desert camp and dinner under the stars. It's the most touristy thing on this list and still the one most visitors rate highest, because the landscape an hour inland looks nothing like the city.
Afternoon departures run into sunset, which is the whole point: the dunes turn orange, the heat drops and the camp lights up after dark. Morning safaris are shorter and focus on dune driving without the dinner. If you get car sick easily, ask for a gentler drive or sit in the front seat.

The fountain show runs every half hour through the evening and is free to watch from the promenade around Burj Lake. It's worth doing properly at least once: a traditional abra boat ride on the lake puts you close enough to feel the spray and see the Burj Khalifa straight above you. Here are the Dubai Fountain show timings and best viewing spots.
At AED 25, it's the cheapest genuinely memorable thing in Downtown, and it fits neatly after a Burj Khalifa sunset slot.

Floating over the desert as the sun comes up is the most memorable splurge you can make in Dubai. You fly for about an hour over the dunes, with the light changing the colour of the sand beneath you, and it's completely silent apart from the burner. Our hot air balloon price guide explains what's included and whether it's worth it.
The catch is the early start: hotel pickup is usually between 4am and 5am. Book it for the first or second morning of your trip, while you're still jet-lagged and awake early anyway.

See the balloon flight5Old Dubai: the Creek, the souks and Al Fahidi
Walk the wind-tower lanes of Al Fahidi, cross the Creek on a traditional abra for a couple of dirhams, and get lost in the Gold and Spice Souks. Half a day here explains Dubai better than anything in Downtown, because it shows what was here sixty years ago.
Go in the morning or after 4pm. The middle of the day is hot, and many souk stalls close for a long break.

A 150-metre picture frame in Zabeel Park with a glass-floored bridge across the top. It stands right on the line between old and new Dubai, so you look north to Deira and south to the towers of Sheikh Zayed Road. The ticket is modest, and it's the best-value view in the city.
Our Dubai Frame view timing guide explains which side to face and when queues are shortest.

See tickets7Dubai Marina from the water
The Marina is a canyon of towers that looks completely different from sea level, especially after dark. There are two good ways to do it:
- A mega yacht dinner cruise, from AED 149, for a set evening with dinner and entertainment. Not sure whether to choose the Marina or the Creek? Read our Marina vs Creek dinner cruise comparison.
- A private yacht charter, from AED 380, if you'd rather choose the route, the music and the timing yourself.
Trying to decide between morning and evening? Our Dubai Marina yacht tour comparison covers it, and our guide to the top attractions in Dubai Marina covers the rest of the area.
8Dubai Miracle Garden
Millions of flowers arranged into arches, hearts, a castle and a full-size Emirates A380. It's unapologetically over the top and photographs even better than it sounds. The garden is seasonal: the 2026–27 season runs from 8 October 2026 to 31 May 2027, and it closes through the summer.
Our Dubai Miracle Garden guide covers this season's ticket prices, timings and how to get there.

Ninety minutes down the coast is a genuinely different city. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the one unmissable building in the UAE. Note that it introduced a visitor entry fee in 2026, and its dress code is strictly enforced, so read our Grand Mosque entry fee and dress code guide before you go.
Pair the mosque with one more stop:
- Qasr Al Watan, the working Presidential Palace, from AED 62. Stay for the evening light show; our Qasr Al Watan guide explains how.
- Louvre Abu Dhabi, from AED 49, under Jean Nouvel's famous perforated dome.
Don't try to do all three in one day.

Dubai's indoor attractions aren't a consolation prize. Several are among the best things you'll do, and between June and September they're the whole itinerary. Pick the one that suits your group:
- The Green Planet: an indoor rainforest with sloths, free-flying birds and an aquarium. Great with young children.
- teamLab Phenomena: a building of digital environments in Abu Dhabi that react to your movement. Best for adults and teenagers.
- Warner Bros. World and Ferrari World: two fully indoor theme parks on Yas Island. Our UAE theme parks guide compares them. See our Warner Bros. World rides and height guide.
How to fit it into your trip
| Trip length | What to prioritise |
|---|---|
| 2 days | Burj Khalifa at sunset with the Dubai Fountain, a desert safari, and Old Dubai with the Creek |
| 4 days | Add the Dubai Frame, Dubai Marina from the water and one indoor attraction |
| 7 days | Add an Abu Dhabi day trip, a sunrise balloon flight and Miracle Garden in season |
Group your days by area rather than by interest. Downtown, Dubai Marina, Old Dubai and Abu Dhabi are far enough apart that zig-zagging between them costs you an attraction a day. If you're still choosing when to travel, our best time to visit Dubai guide explains how the seasons change what's possible.
Tips and mistakes to avoid
- Book timed slots before you fly. Burj Khalifa sunset slots and popular tours sell out in winter.
- Don't over-plan with children. Two major attractions a day is plenty with under-tens. Our family-friendly activities guide sorts the city by age.
- Respect the heat. From May to September, do outdoor things before 10am or after sunset.
- Plan your transport. Dubai is spread out, and taxis add up. A private car with driver often costs less than a day of taxis for a family.
- Check what's open. Some attractions are seasonal or closed for renovation, so confirm before you build a day around one.

FAQs about things to do in Dubai
What is the number one thing to do in Dubai?
The Burj Khalifa observation deck at sunset. It's the one experience almost every first-time visitor rates highly, and booking the right time slot makes a big difference.
How many days do you need in Dubai?
Four days covers the main highlights. Seven days lets you add an Abu Dhabi day trip, a balloon flight and a slower pace.
What can you do in Dubai for free?
Watch the Dubai Fountain show from the promenade, walk around Al Fahidi and the souks, visit the public beaches, and explore Dubai Marina Walk. The abra across the Creek costs only a few dirhams.
What is the best time of year to visit Dubai?
November to March, when the weather is mild and outdoor attractions such as Miracle Garden and desert safaris are at their best. Summer is cheaper but very hot.
Is the Museum of the Future open?
No. It closed in September 2026 for a full exhibition overhaul and is expected to reopen in the first quarter of 2027.
Is a day trip to Abu Dhabi worth it?
Yes. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque alone justifies the trip. Pair it with Qasr Al Watan or Louvre Abu Dhabi, but don't try to fit in all three.
