Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first museum outside France to carry the Louvre name, and its building is almost as famous as its collection: a vast, latticed dome that seems to float over a cluster of white galleries by the sea. Inside, the museum tells the story of humanity through art from every continent, arranged by time period rather than by country. This guide covers tickets, opening hours, the highlights you shouldn't miss and how to plan your visit.
Quick answer: Louvre Abu Dhabi is on Saadiyat Island and is closed on Mondays. The galleries open from 10am to 6:30pm Tuesday to Thursday and 10am to 8:30pm Friday to Sunday. Standard adult tickets cost around AED 70, or from AED 49 through DUBEX TOURS, and children under 13 enter free. Allow 2 to 3 hours, and visit in the late afternoon for the best light under the dome.

What is Louvre Abu Dhabi?
Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in November 2017 as part of an agreement between the UAE and France. It's a museum in its own right, with its own permanent collection, but it also shows works on loan from major French museums, including the Musée du Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay. Because loans rotate, the exact works on display change over time.
What makes it different is how the story is told. Instead of separate rooms for Egypt, Europe or China, the galleries move through history in chapters, from the first villages to the modern world. Objects from different cultures made at the same time stand side by side, so you see how civilisations developed in parallel.

Best time to visit
Late afternoon is the best time. The sun is lower, the "rain of light" through the dome is at its most beautiful, and on Fridays to Sundays you can stay inside until 8:30pm. Weekday mornings are the quietest if you want the galleries to yourself.
What to see at Louvre Abu Dhabi
The dome and the "rain of light"
The dome, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, is about 180 metres across and made of layers of interlocking metal stars. Sunlight filters through the gaps and falls in moving patterns on the walkways below, an effect known as the "rain of light". It's worth spending time outside the galleries, on the plaza under the dome and along the water's edge.
The chapter galleries
The permanent galleries are arranged in 12 chapters, from the earliest villages and the first great powers, through the rise of world religions and global trade, to the modern and contemporary world. Follow them in order for the full story, or pick the periods that interest you most.
Highlights from the collection
- A Bactrian princess: a small, striking figure more than 4,000 years old, from ancient Central Asia.
- A self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh, one of the most popular works in the museum.
- Fountain of Light by Ai Weiwei: a huge crystal-and-steel sculpture in the contemporary galleries.
- Works on loan from French museums, which change regularly and often include famous European paintings.
Because loans rotate and some works go on display only for a period, check the museum's website if a specific artwork is your main reason for visiting.
Temporary exhibitions
The museum runs major temporary exhibitions through the year, which may need a separate ticket. They're often the most talked-about part of a visit, so it's worth checking what's on.
How long to spend at Louvre Abu Dhabi
- 2 hours lets you walk through all the chapter galleries at a steady pace.
- 3 hours lets you read the captions, see a temporary exhibition and spend time under the dome.
- Half a day if you add a meal at the museum café and a walk along the waterfront.

Visiting Louvre Abu Dhabi with children
The Louvre works well for families. Children under 13 enter free and must stay with an adult. The museum also has a dedicated Children's Museum with its own programme of hands-on activities, which makes a good break from the main galleries.
Tips for families: visit in the morning when children have more energy, focus on a few chapters rather than all twelve, and let them run around under the dome afterwards. For more ideas, see our guide to family-friendly activities in Dubai.
Getting there and what's nearby
Louvre Abu Dhabi is in the Saadiyat Cultural District on Saadiyat Island. From Dubai, it's about 90 minutes to 2 hours by road. Parking at the museum is free. There's no rail link to Saadiyat, so driving, a taxi or a private car with driver are the practical options.
Combine it with

- Qasr Al Watan, the Presidential Palace, with its evening light show.
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the highlight of most Abu Dhabi trips. Read our Grand Mosque entry fee and dress code guide first.
The Louvre and the Grand Mosque make the best pairing for a first visit: the mosque in the morning, then the Louvre in the late afternoon for the light under the dome.
