The building is the first exhibit

Louvre Abu Dhabi opened on Saadiyat Island in 2017 as the result of an intergovernmental agreement between the UAE and France. Jean Nouvel designed it as a low cluster of white buildings — a "museum city" — under a single 180-metre dome made of nearly 8,000 metal stars in eight layers.

Sunlight filters through those layers and lands on the plaza below as a shifting pattern Nouvel called the rain of light. It moves through the day and it is the thing most visitors photograph before they have looked at a single artwork. Give it ten minutes before you go inside.

How the galleries are organised

This is what makes Louvre Abu Dhabi different from most encyclopaedic museums. The twelve chapter galleries run chronologically rather than by civilisation, so a single room places objects from different cultures that were made at the same moment side by side. A Chinese bronze sits near a Mediterranean figure near an object from the Levant, because they are contemporaries.

It is a genuinely useful way to look at art history, and it is the reason to take your time rather than hunting for individual famous names.

Loans rotate in from the Musée du Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Centre Pompidou and others, so the headline works change. Check what is on loan before you go if a specific piece is the reason for the trip.

Practical planning

• Allow two to three hours; three if you intend to read the captions properly
• Closed on Mondays — this catches people out more than anything else
• Late afternoon gives the best light under the dome and on the waterfront
• Photography without flash is permitted in the permanent galleries
• The Children's Museum runs its own programme and is worth checking with family

Getting there from Dubai

Saadiyat Island is roughly 90 minutes to two hours from Dubai by road, depending on where you start and the traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road. There is no rail link, so you are driving or booking a car. Most visitors from Dubai make it a full-day trip and combine it with a second Abu Dhabi stop rather than driving down for the museum alone.

What to combine it with

The obvious pairing is Qasr Al Watan, the working presidential palace about 25 minutes away, which is the other serious cultural stop in Abu Dhabi. Many visitors build the day around the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque tour from Dubai and add the Louvre in the afternoon. If you want to set your own order and timings across all three, a private car with driver for the day is usually the more comfortable way to do it.
