Louvre Abu Dhabi Tickets: Saadiyat Island Museum

Entry to Louvre Abu Dhabi from AED 49, covering the permanent galleries, the dome and the waterfront plaza. Before anything else, two timing facts that catch more visitors out than any others: the museum is closed on Mondays, and the galleries close several hours before the building does.

Opening times, properly explained

The building is open from 10am until midnight, which is what most listings quote. The galleries and exhibitions are not. They close at 6:30pm on weekdays and 8:30pm at weekends, so an evening arrival gets you the dome, the plaza and the waterfront but not the art.

That late window is genuinely worth having if you know what you are getting: the dome lit after dark, with the sea on three sides, is one of the better things to do in Abu Dhabi in the evening. It is just not a substitute for the collection. If the art is the point, arrive in the afternoon at the latest.

It is also worth knowing that individual galleries close temporarily while new works are installed, so an occasional room may be shut on any given day.

The building is the first exhibit

Louvre Abu Dhabi opened on Saadiyat Island in 2017 as the result of an intergovernmental agreement between the UAE and France. Jean Nouvel designed it as a low cluster of white buildings, a museum city, under a single 180-metre dome made of nearly 8,000 metal stars in eight layers.

Sunlight filters through those layers and lands on the plaza below as a shifting pattern Nouvel called the rain of light. It moves through the day and it is the thing most visitors photograph before they have looked at a single artwork. Give it ten minutes before you go inside.

How the galleries are organised

This is what makes the museum different from most encyclopaedic collections. The twelve chapter galleries run chronologically rather than by civilisation, so a single room places objects from different cultures that were made at the same moment side by side. A Chinese bronze sits near a Mediterranean figure near an object from the Levant, because they are contemporaries.

It is a genuinely useful way to look at art history, and it is the reason to take your time rather than hunting for individual famous names.

Loans rotate in from the Musee du Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, Centre Pompidou and others, so the headline works change. Check what is on loan before you travel if one specific piece is the reason for the trip.

Before you buy a ticket for a child

The museum's own policy gives free entry to visitors under 18, to senior UAE residents and to People of Determination. Ask us before you buy if your group includes any of them, so you are not paying for admission that is not needed. We would rather sell you fewer tickets than have you find that out at the desk.

Practical planning

• Allow two to three hours, and three if you intend to read the captions properly.
• Closed on Mondays.
• Late afternoon gives the best light under the dome and on the waterfront.
• Photography without flash is permitted in the permanent galleries.
• The Children's Museum runs its own programme and is worth checking if you are travelling with family.

Getting there from Dubai

Saadiyat Island is roughly 90 minutes to two hours from Dubai by road, depending on where you start and the traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road. There is no rail link, so you are driving or booking a car.

Most visitors from Dubai make it a full-day trip and combine it with a second Abu Dhabi stop rather than driving down for the museum alone.

What to combine it with

teamLab Phenomena is on the same island and makes the sharpest contrast: one museum built around objects and history, one built around environments that will not exist tomorrow. Qasr Al Watan is about 25 minutes away.

Many visitors build the day around the Grand Mosque tour from Dubai and add the Louvre in the afternoon, with a car and driver handling the distances in between.
