Abu Dhabi is the UAE's capital, and it feels very different from Dubai: calmer, greener, and home to the country's most impressive mosque and its working presidential palace. It's also close enough to see in a day. This guide gives you ready-made itineraries, compares every way to get there (including the new Etihad Rail train), and breaks down what a day trip really costs.

Quick answer: A Dubai to Abu Dhabi day trip works best with two main stops, usually Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque plus Qasr Al Watan or Louvre Abu Dhabi. The drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way. The cheapest way is the Etihad Rail train, from AED 39 and about an hour on board, though station connections add time. A private car or tour is the easiest option. Entry tickets for the main sights cost roughly AED 10 to 65 each.

  • Drive timeAbout 1.5–2 hours

  • BusAbout AED 30, 2+ hours

Abu Dhabi day trip itineraries

The most common mistake is trying to see everything. The city is spread out, and the drive from Dubai takes a good part of the day, so two main stops is the realistic number. Here are four itineraries, each built around a different interest.

1. The classic: Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan

Best for first-time visitors who want Abu Dhabi's two signature buildings.

TimePlan
8:00amLeave Dubai
10:00amSheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with a free guided tour at 11am
12:30pmLunch at Souq Al Jami next to the mosque
2:00pmDrive along the Corniche, with a photo stop at Emirates Palace
3:30pmQasr Al Watan: the palace and gardens
EveningStay for the Palace in Motion light show, then drive back to Dubai

2. Art and culture: Grand Mosque and Saadiyat Island

Best for art lovers. Spend the morning at the mosque, then head to Saadiyat Island for Louvre Abu Dhabi or teamLab Phenomena. Choose one of the two; both deserve two to three hours. Our Louvre guide and teamLab Phenomena guide help you decide.

3. Theme parks: a full day on Yas Island

Best for families and thrill-seekers. Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World are next to each other on Yas Island, about 60 to 90 minutes from Dubai. Pick one park per day. Our Ferrari World ride guide, Warner Bros. World ride guide and UAE theme parks guide help you choose.

4. Mosque and theme park in one day

Best if you want the highlights at speed. Visit the Grand Mosque in the morning, drive past the Corniche and Emirates Palace, then spend the afternoon at Ferrari World. Our Abu Dhabi city tour with Ferrari World follows exactly this plan.

Etihad Rail: the new train

Since 30 September 2026, Etihad Rail passenger trains have linked Dubai and Abu Dhabi in about 1 hour and 4 minutes. Comfort class costs from AED 39 and Premium from AED 109, and tickets are sold on Etihad Rail's website and app.

  • In Dubai, trains leave from Al Yalayis station, next to Jumeirah Golf Estates. A 400-metre walkway connects it to the Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro station on the Red Line.
  • In Abu Dhabi, trains arrive at Mohamed bin Zayed City, outside the city centre. A shuttle (about AED 10, booked with your rail ticket) runs to the Corniche, ADNEC and Reem Mall.
  • Timetable: there are only a handful of trains each way per day. At launch, the first train left Dubai at 6:14am and the last train back reached Dubai at 6:47pm. Check the current timetable before you plan.
Is the train good for a day trip?

For a budget trip to one area, yes. But the stations are outside both city centres, and the last train back leaves early, so you'd miss the Qasr Al Watan light show and need taxis between the sights. For a two-stop day, a car is usually more practical.

Intercity bus

The E100 bus runs from Al Ghubaiba bus station in Dubai to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station and costs about AED 30. The bus ride takes over two hours, and with connections at each end, allow about three hours door to door. It's the cheapest option, but it uses up most of your day.

Driving yourself

With a hire car, the drive takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Prefer not to drive? A car with driver covers fuel, tolls and parking. Fuel and tolls (Salik in Dubai and Darb in Abu Dhabi) come to roughly AED 75 to 85 each way, plus parking.

Private car or tour

The easiest option, especially with children or more than two people. A full-day private car with driver lets you set your own timetable and stay for the evening light show. A guided Grand Mosque tour from Dubai covers transport and a guide.

How much does an Abu Dhabi day trip cost?

Here's a realistic budget per person for the classic itinerary (Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan):

CostBudget tripComfortable trip
Transport (return)About AED 80–120 by train or bus, plus local taxisPrivate car from AED 645, shared by the group
Grand Mosque entryAED 10AED 10
Qasr Al WatanFrom AED 62From AED 62
LunchAbout AED 40–60About AED 100+
Abaya, if neededAbout AED 45 (bring your own to save this)About AED 45

For a family of four, a private car usually works out cheaper per person than four train tickets plus taxis between the sights, and it's far easier.

Dress code and practical tips

  • Dress for the mosque. Women need loose clothing to the ankles and wrists, with hair covered; men need long trousers. The mosque no longer lends abayas. Dress this way and you'll also be fine for Qasr Al Watan, which asks visitors to cover knees and shoulders.
  • Book the mosque in advance. Visitors now need an online access pass.
  • Avoid Friday midday. The Grand Mosque closes to visitors between 11:30am and 2:30pm on Fridays.
  • Bring water and sun protection. The mosque courtyard gets very hot in the sun.
  • Start early. Leaving Dubai by 8am avoids the worst traffic and the midday heat.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to see everything. Two main stops is the realistic limit for a day trip.
  • Assuming the mosque is free. Since 2026, tourists pay AED 10 and need to book.
  • Relying on the train for a two-stop day. The stations are outside the city centres, and the last train leaves early.
  • Wearing the wrong clothes. The mosque dress code is strictly enforced, and abayas are no longer lent.
