Getting from the airport to your hotel is the first thing you will do in Dubai and the easiest thing to get wrong. This guide covers every option honestly, including the ones we do not sell, so you can pick the one that actually fits your arrival.
Which Dubai airport are you landing at?
This trips up more travellers than anything else. Dubai has two international airports roughly 60 kilometres apart.
- Dubai International (DXB) in Garhoud handles the large majority of flights across Terminals 1, 2 and 3. It sits close to the city centre.
- Al Maktoum International (DWC) in Dubai South is used by a growing number of budget and charter carriers. It is about 50 kilometres from Downtown, with noticeably thinner taxi coverage.
Check your boarding pass before booking anything. A car booked for the wrong airport is an expensive mistake, and the two are nowhere near each other.

The Dubai Metro
The Red Line serves Terminals 1 and 3 directly and is genuinely cheap. The catch is luggage: you will change lines, walk long connecting passages, and Dubai Metro restricts oversized baggage. It runs roughly 5am to midnight, so a late arrival rules it out entirely. Good for a solo traveller with a carry-on, poor for almost everyone else.
Metered taxis
Dubai's official taxi rank works and the cars are regulated and metered. The drawbacks are queue length at peak arrival banks, which can reach 20 to 30 minutes, and the fact that the final fare is unknown until you arrive.
Careem and Uber
Both operate at DXB with designated pickup zones. Convenient, but pricing surges exactly when several wide-bodies land together, which is the moment you most want a car.
Private airport transfer
A driver waits inside arrivals with a name board, the fare is agreed before you fly, and the flight is tracked so a delay does not cost the booking. It is what we do, and it is worth being clear about when it is not the right choice: for one person with hand luggage travelling off-peak to a Metro-adjacent hotel, the Metro is better value.
DXB terminals explained
- Terminal 1 — most international carriers other than Emirates and flydubai. Metro connected.
- Terminal 2 — flydubai and regional airlines. No Metro station; taxi or transfer only.
- Terminal 3 — Emirates and Qantas. The largest terminal in the world by floor area, and Metro connected.
Terminals 1 and 3 are linked by a free shuttle. Terminal 2 is on the opposite side of the airfield, so allow extra time if you are connecting through it.
How long does a Dubai airport transfer take?
From DXB in normal traffic:
- Deira and Bur Dubai — 10 to 20 minutes
- Downtown and Business Bay — 20 to 30 minutes
- Palm Jumeirah — 30 to 40 minutes
- Dubai Marina and JBR — 35 to 45 minutes
Add twenty minutes or more during the weekday rush between 5pm and 8pm, and on Friday evenings. From DWC, add roughly 20 to 25 minutes to each of these.
What to do in your first hour
Immigration and baggage
Most nationalities receive a visa on arrival. Emirates ID scanning has made DXB immigration fast, but arrival banks cluster, so allow 30 to 45 minutes from touchdown to kerb on a busy morning.
SIM cards and cash
Etisalat and du both have arrivals desks and offer tourist SIM bundles. You rarely need cash — card acceptance is near universal — but a small amount is useful for abras and souks.
Booking a Dubai airport transfer: what to check
- Free waiting time. Sixty minutes from touchdown is the standard worth holding out for.
- Flight tracking. Without it, a delay becomes your problem.
- Meet and greet inside arrivals, not a kerbside phone call.
- Vehicle size against bag count. The single most common day-of problem is a car too small for the luggage.
- Whether tolls and parking are included in the quoted price.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Booking for the wrong airport. Check DXB versus DWC on your ticket.
- Assuming the Metro runs all night. It does not.
- Underestimating Friday evening traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road.
- Leaving under three hours for an international departure from Terminal 3.
- Not booking a child seat in advance — they cannot be produced at the kerb.
