Al Maktoum Airport Transfer (DWC): Private Car

Make sure DWC is actually your airport

Dubai has two international airports about 60 kilometres apart, and most visitors do not land at this one. Al Maktoum currently handles seasonal charters, a few smaller airlines, cargo and general aviation, and it sees under a million passengers a year, against tens of millions at Dubai International.

So check the three-letter code on your ticket before you book anything. If it says DXB you want the DXB airport transfer instead. Booking the wrong one is the most common mistake on this route, and the two fares are not interchangeable because the distances are completely different.

That is going to change

Dubai is moving its airport operations to DWC over the next several years. Dubai Airports has said flydubai is expected to lead the shift around the end of 2027, timed with a second runway opening, and Emirates is targeting a move of its passenger operations around 2032, starting with cargo. Foreign carriers follow after that.

None of that affects a booking today, but it is worth knowing if you fly to Dubai regularly, because the airport you arrive at may not be the one you are used to within a few years.

Why DWC is the airport worth pre-booking

Distance is the thing travellers underestimate. DWC is roughly 50 kilometres from Downtown and further still from Deira, so it is a genuine journey rather than a hop across town.

Taxi supply at DWC is also thinner than at DXB, because flight volumes are low and arrivals cluster. When two flights land together the rank empties fast and app pricing climbs steeply. Booking ahead fixes both the price and the wait, and there is no realistic public transport alternative at the far end of a long flight.

How the pickup works

We track your flight from departure, so your driver's arrival follows the actual landing time rather than the timetable. Your driver waits inside the arrivals hall holding a name board, helps with the luggage and walks you to the vehicle. You get 60 minutes of free waiting from touchdown, which on a normal day covers immigration and baggage comfortably.

Journey times from DWC

• Dubai Marina and JBR: 35 to 45 minutes
• Palm Jumeirah: 40 to 50 minutes
• Downtown and Business Bay: 45 to 55 minutes
• Deira and Bur Dubai: 55 to 70 minutes
• Abu Dhabi: around 60 minutes, which is closer than from DXB

Friday evenings and the weekday rush between 5pm and 8pm can add twenty minutes or more. Because the baseline journey is already long, a delay here costs you more than the same delay would from DXB.

Vehicles

The standard vehicle takes up to six passengers with two or three pieces of luggage. That is the combination worth checking before you book: six passengers each with a large suitcase will not fit, and a bigger vehicle is available on request.

So give us the headcount and the bag count when you book, rather than the headcount alone. It is the single most common cause of a problem on arrival.

With DWC's distance this matters more than at a city-centre airport. Arriving to a vehicle that is too small, fifty kilometres from your hotel, is a genuinely awkward problem to fix at the kerb.

Flying out of DWC

Allow more time than you would for DXB, not less. The drive is longer, there is no metro, and a car that does not turn up leaves you with no easy fallback. For an international departure, three hours at the airport plus the full journey time from your hotel is the sensible planning figure.

Going further than a transfer
