A Dubai layover is one of the best stopovers in the world to step outside for. Dubai International (DXB) sits right in the city, about 15 to 25 minutes from the Burj Khalifa, so even a six-hour connection can give you a proper look at Dubai. The trick is doing the maths honestly: immigration on the way out, traffic, and being back through security in time. This guide shows how much time you really get in the city, then gives ready-made plans for 6, 8 and 12 hours, by day and by night.
Quick answer: With 6 hours, stick to Downtown: the Burj Khalifa or the Dubai Fountain and Dubai Mall. With 8 hours, add Old Dubai's Creek and souks. With 12 hours, book a private city tour or a car with driver and see Old Dubai, Downtown and the coast. Under 5–6 hours, stay in the airport. Whatever your layover, plan to be back at the terminal about 2 to 3 hours before your next flight.
- Minimum to leaveAbout 6 hours
- Airport to Downtown15–25 min by taxi
- Be back at the terminal2–3 hrs before departure
- Transit visa (via Emirates)48 hrs from US$10
- Left luggageFrom about AED 35
- MetroRed Line from T1 and T3
Can you leave the airport on a Dubai layover?
Yes, if your passport allows you to enter the UAE. Citizens of around 49 countries, including the UK, US, Canada, Australia and most of the EU, can enter without arranging a visa in advance, free of charge, for up to 90 days. Several other nationalities can get a visa on arrival.
If your nationality needs a visa in advance, a transit visa is the cheapest option for a layover. When you fly Emirates with both Dubai flights on one booking, you can apply in Manage Your Booking: a 48-hour transit visa costs about US$10 and a 96-hour visa about US$49, with an additional government service charge, and Emirates recommends applying at least four working days before you arrive. Both start from the moment you land and can't be extended. Eligible passengers on Emirates' Dubai Connect programme may receive the 48-hour visa free.
Entry rules depend on your passport, not your departure country. Check your status with your airline or the UAE's official immigration services before you travel. Without permission to enter, you can't leave the airport, however long your layover.
Landing at Al Maktoum International (DWC) instead of DXB? It's much further from the city, so add an hour to everything below. Our DWC to Dubai guide explains why.
How much time you really get in the city
Most layover guides skip this part, which is how people end up running for gates. Here's the honest maths for a Dubai layover from DXB:
- Getting out: 30 to 60 minutes from the plane to the kerb, for walking, immigration and any bags.
- Travelling: 15 to 25 minutes each way to Downtown or Old Dubai by taxi, longer at rush hour (5pm to 8pm).
- Getting back: airlines want you through passport control and security well before departure; Emirates asks passengers who need to check in again to be through 90 minutes before. Aim to be back at the terminal 2 to 3 hours before your flight.
| Layover | Time in the city | Best plan |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 hours | Not enough | Stay airside: lounge, duty free, rest |
| 6 hours | About 2 hours | Downtown only: Burj Khalifa or the fountain |
| 8 hours | About 4 hours | Old Dubai, then Downtown |
| 12 hours | About 7–8 hours | A private city tour or car with driver |
| 24 hours or more | A full day | Book a hotel, add a desert safari or the Marina |
What to do with a 6-hour layover in Dubai
Six hours gives you about two hours in the city, so pick one area: Downtown. It's the closest of the big sights to the airport, and everything is in one place.
The Burj Khalifa
- 0:00 Land; clear immigration (allow up to an hour)
- 1:00 Taxi to Dubai Mall (about 20 minutes)
- 1:30 Burj Khalifa At the Top, booked in advance
- 3:00 Quick look at the Dubai Aquarium tank in the mall (free from the shopping floor)
- 3:30 Taxi back to DXB
- 4:00 Back at the terminal, 2 hours before departure
The Dubai Fountain
- 0:00 Land; clear immigration
- 1:00 Taxi to Dubai Mall
- 1:30 Two fountain shows from the Souk Al Bahar bridge (every 30 minutes, 6pm to 11pm)
- 2:30 Dinner facing the lake
- 3:30 Taxi back; at the terminal by 4:00
Book Burj Khalifa tickets for a set time before you fly, so you don't lose time at the counter; our At the Top vs SKY guide explains the levels. For the evening, our fountain timings guide shows the best spots.
What to do with an 8-hour layover in Dubai
Eight hours gives you about four hours in the city, enough for two areas that are close together: Old Dubai and Downtown. Old Dubai is only about 15 minutes from the airport, so start there.
- 0:00 Land and clear immigration
- 1:00 Taxi to Al Fahidi (about 15 minutes)
- 1:15 Walk the Al Fahidi lanes and the Al Seef waterfront
- 2:00 Cross the Creek by abra (a dirham or two, cash) to the Spice and Gold Souks
- 3:00 Taxi to Downtown (about 20 minutes)
- 3:30 Burj Khalifa, or the fountain if it's evening
- 5:00 Taxi back to DXB; at the terminal 2 to 3 hours before departure
Prefer a view to the souks? Swap Old Dubai for the Dubai Frame, which looks over both old and new Dubai and is also close to the airport.
What to do with a 12-hour layover in Dubai
Twelve hours gives you a proper day: about 7 to 8 hours in the city. That's enough for Old Dubai, Downtown and the coast. It's also when a driver makes most sense, because there's no time to waste working out taxis between areas.
The daytime plan
- Morning Old Dubai: Al Fahidi, the abra and the souks
- Late morning The Dubai Frame
- Lunch In Downtown or Jumeirah
- Afternoon A photo stop at the Burj Al Arab view (the hotel itself is closed for restoration until around October 2027), then the Palm and Dubai Marina
- Late afternoon The Burj Khalifa, then back to the airport
The easiest way to do this is a private Dubai city tour, from AED 750 per group, or a full-day car with driver, from AED 645, with fuel, tolls and parking included. The driver waits at every stop, and you can keep your hand luggage in the car. Message us with your flight times and we'll tell you whether pickup and drop-off at the airport fit your layover. Our car with driver guide explains how the day works.
The evening plan
If your 12 hours fall in the evening, spend the first hours in Old Dubai or at the Dubai Frame, then see the city lit up. Our 4-hour Dubai by night tour stops at the Marina, the Palm, Jumeirah, the Creek and Dubai Mall for the fountain, starting at 6pm, 7pm or 8pm. Ask us on WhatsApp whether the timing and pickup work with your flights. For more evening ideas, see our guide to things to do in Dubai at night.
Make the most of a long Dubai layover
A private city tour with your own car and driver, planned around your flight times. Old Dubai, Downtown and the coast, at your pace, from AED 750 per group.
Getting from the airport into the city and back
| Option | To Downtown | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi | 15–25 min | About AED 60–80 each way | 6- and 8-hour layovers |
| Metro (Red Line, T1 and T3) | 45–75 min door to door | From AED 3 with a Nol card | Budget travellers with time to spare |
| Private transfer | 15–25 min | From AED 240 per car, one way | Families and groups |
| Car with driver or private tour | Driver waits all day | From AED 645 per car | 12-hour layovers |
On a short layover, the taxi is usually the right choice: it's quick and runs 24/7 from every terminal. The metro saves money but costs time you don't have. Terminal 2 has no metro station. Our guide to getting from Dubai airport to your hotel covers every option in detail, and a private airport transfer is easiest if you're travelling as a family.
What to do with your luggage
If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you only need to carry your hand luggage. If you have bags with you, use the left-luggage desks, which are open 24 hours in every terminal. The last published prices were about AED 35 to 40 per bag for up to 12 hours at Terminal 3 (Emirates Left Luggage, arrivals level near Exit 1) and AED 40 to 50 at Terminals 1 and 2 (dnata). Check current prices at the desk.
Night layovers: what's open late
- The Dubai Fountain: free shows every 30 minutes until 11pm.
- Dubai Mall: open late, with restaurants facing the fountain.
- The Burj Khalifa: evening slots run late and are often cheaper than sunset.
- Dubai Marina and JBR: busy until around midnight, but 35 to 45 minutes from the airport.
- The metro usually stops around midnight (1am on Fridays), so take a taxi back late at night.

Short layover? Staying in the airport
Under five or six hours, leaving the airport is rarely worth the stress. DXB is one of the world's biggest airports, with lounges (some open to anyone for a fee), places to sleep, a huge duty-free area and plenty of restaurants. A free shuttle links the terminals if your next flight leaves from a different one, but allow extra time for that transfer.
Mistakes that make people miss flights
- Underestimating immigration. At busy times, the queue to get out can take close to an hour.
- Forgetting rush hour. Sheikh Zayed Road can double journey times between 5pm and 8pm.
- Coming back to the wrong terminal. Check whether your next flight leaves from Terminal 1, 2 or 3.
- Not checking entry rules. If your passport needs a visa, sort it before you fly.
- Trying to see too much. One area done well beats three areas seen through a taxi window.
- Planning around closed attractions. The Museum of the Future is closed until early 2027, and the Burj Al Arab hotel is closed for restoration until around October 2027. See our guide to Dubai tourist attractions for what's open now.

Dubai layover FAQs
Can you leave Dubai airport during a layover?
Yes, if your passport allows you to enter the UAE. Many nationalities, including UK, US, EU, Canadian and Australian citizens, can enter without arranging a visa in advance. Others can apply for a 48- or 96-hour transit visa through their airline before they fly.
Is a 6-hour layover in Dubai enough to leave the airport?
Just about. After immigration, travel and getting back 2 to 3 hours before your flight, you'll have about two hours in the city. Use it for one area, ideally Downtown for the Burj Khalifa or the fountain.
What can I do with an 8-hour layover in Dubai?
Spend about four hours in the city: Old Dubai's Al Fahidi, the abra and the souks, then the Burj Khalifa or the Dubai Fountain in Downtown. Both are close to the airport.
What is the best way to spend a 12-hour layover in Dubai?
Book a private city tour or a car with driver and cover Old Dubai, the Dubai Frame, Downtown and the coast in about seven to eight hours, with a driver waiting at every stop.
How much is a Dubai transit visa?
Through Emirates, a 48-hour transit visa costs about US$10 and a 96-hour visa about US$49, plus a government service charge. Both flights must be on one Emirates booking. Check current prices before you apply.
How early should I get back to Dubai airport after a layover?
Aim to be back at the terminal 2 to 3 hours before departure. Airlines want you through passport control and security well before boarding, and queues can be long at peak times.
Can I store my luggage at Dubai airport?
Yes. Left-luggage desks in every terminal are open 24 hours. The last published prices were about AED 35 to 50 per bag for up to 12 hours, depending on the terminal and bag size.
Is there a Dubai layover tour?
Yes. For long layovers, a private city tour or a car with driver can be planned around your flight times. Message us with your arrival and departure times and we'll suggest what fits.
